Each of these recipes uses sugar and coconut oil as a base. The only differences are the essential oils and other natural ingredients added.

Make the Base

Ingredients:

1/4 cup coconut oil

3/4 cup organic cane or granulated sugar

Start by softening the coconut oil in the microwave for a few seconds to make it easier to mix. Be careful not to let it get too hot. It won’t do any damage to the scrub, but DIY projects are no fun when they end in second degree burns. Grab a medium sized glass bowl and mix the softened coconut oil and sugar well. Now comes the fun part…

Add the Scent

Choose one of the following flavors and combine ingredients with sugar and coconut oil base. Of course, when I say flavor, I really mean scent. However tempting it might be, don’t eat the sugar scrub. Much like play-dough, it smells great but tastes awful.

Orange Creamsicle Sugar Scrub

1teaspoon of vanilla extract

10 drops of orange essential oil

Cococunut & Lime Sugar Scrub

Zest of one lime

5 drops lime flavoring oil

5 dops of lime flavoring oil

5 drops coconut flavoring oil

Pina Colada Sugar Scrub

1 tablespoon of lemon juice

Zest of 1 lemon

Vanilla Lavender Sugar Scrub

1/2 teaspoon real vanilla extract

15 drops lavender essential oil

Store It

Store your fancy new scrub in an airtight container. Tupperware is fine (not very glamorous, mind you) but a glass mason jar adds that fun, crafty touch. If you’re an overachiever, you can print out a fun label to put on the jar. The scrubs stay good for about two months. Beyond that, things might get a little rank.

Use It

While in the shower or bath, gently rub a spoonful of the scrub into your legs, using a circular motion. You see where I said “gently” in the previous sentence? I meant it! Don’t grind it into your skin; it’s an exfoliator not a sandblaster. Rinse and go! You don’t even need to moisturize afterward.

I recommend shaving your legs after you exfoliate rather than beforehand. The scrub will remove dead skin cells from your legs, allowing a closer shave. Also, make sure to rinse your tub or shower pan really well after using your sugar scrub. All that oil leaves a slippery surface.

I hope you have fun creating your inexpensive, delicious smelling sugar scrub. Let me know about your DIY adventure in the comments section!
